The GEO Index tracks how visible businesses are to AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. See real benchmarks by industry, page type, and score distribution – updated in real time from live scans.
What is the GEO Index?
The GEO Index is a live, aggregated dataset of GEO Scores collected from thousands of website scans across industries. It provides benchmark data that helps businesses understand where they stand relative to competitors and industry averages.
Think of it as the S&P 500 for AI visibility – a composite view of how well different sectors and page types perform in AI search engines.
How the GEO Index Works
Every time a website is scanned through Orion’s GEO scoring system, the anonymized results are aggregated into the GEO Index. This creates a living dataset that reflects current AI visibility patterns across the web. The index is segmented by industry, page type, and score distribution.
Industry Benchmarks
AI visibility varies significantly by industry. Technology and SaaS companies typically score highest due to comprehensive documentation and structured content. Key benchmarks:
- Technology/SaaS – Average GEO Score: 42-55. Strong documentation and product pages drive higher scores.
- E-Commerce – Average GEO Score: 28-40. Product schema and reviews help, but many sites lack FAQ content.
- Healthcare – Average GEO Score: 35-48. Authoritative medical content performs well when properly structured.
- Finance – Average GEO Score: 30-42. Regulatory content is comprehensive but often poorly structured for AI extraction.
- Local Services – Average GEO Score: 18-30. Most local businesses have significant room for improvement.
- Education – Average GEO Score: 40-52. Educational content naturally aligns with AI citation patterns.
Score Distribution
The global distribution of GEO Scores follows a pattern:
- 0-19 (Minimal) – Approximately 25% of scanned sites
- 20-39 (Low) – Approximately 35% of scanned sites
- 40-59 (Moderate) – Approximately 25% of scanned sites
- 60-79 (Good) – Approximately 12% of scanned sites
- 80-100 (Excellent) – Approximately 3% of scanned sites
The median GEO Score across all scanned sites is approximately 32, indicating that most websites have significant room to improve their AI visibility.
Page Type Performance
Different page types perform differently in AI visibility:
- FAQ pages – Highest average GEO Scores due to direct question-answer format
- Product pages with schema – Strong performance when properly structured
- Blog posts and guides – Variable, depends on depth and structure
- About pages – Moderate scores, improved with Organization schema
- Generic landing pages – Lowest scores due to marketing-heavy, fact-light content
Using the GEO Index
Compare your GEO Score against your industry benchmark to understand your competitive position. If you’re below the industry average, prioritize the optimization strategies that have the highest impact: FAQ sections, schema markup, and content factual density.
